MySpace teaching children that gay is "naughty"
I posted the short video clip associated with this intel on My Space in early June, 2008 as a sociological experiment. If you watch it, which I hope you'll take approximately a minute to do, you will discover that it is in perfectly good taste in the United States at this time. Two young individuals eye one another, flirtingly skirt each other, slowly approach and end up in a tender lip lock. I judge it to be a happy, romantic embrace with mutual consent. There is no nudity, groping, no hands indicating genital contact, nothing at all but what one might admit is a nicely directed piece of footage of a believable and even enviable kiss. The only uncommon aspect –for some people– is that both subjects are men. If this were a heterosexual couple, probably almost anyone would judge it to be a nice piece of videography with apparent "good chemistry" between the actors. The purpose of my experiment was to discover how individuals, my acquaintances on My Space, and especially the censors at My Space might react. I didn't hear as much as a single peep from any My Space members. However, I'm not a major player on that board, so perhaps no one looked there or possibly looked, but didn't click the play button on You Tube video clip. But the censors most certainly did. It was yanked off My Space within 24 hours of my posting it. The replacement screen read: "The video that you seek has been removed because it was very, very naughty." Those are MySpace's words as best as I can recollect. They definitely said: "very, very naughty" at any rate. I flew into a rage at My Space; they got an earful. How dare they play parent to my or your children and dictate to them that two grown men in an embrace is "very, very naughty." Hundreds of thousands of children are raised in loving homes with two mothers or two fathers. Has My Space the right to teach these children that they are blemished forever with "naughty" parents, hence a "naughty" life? I know that LAMDA or a number of other legal rights groups could have a field day with this issue. I told a heterosexual college professor friend of mine about this; he wants to use the video and my story in his course on Sociology and the Media. The upshot is that it was rapidly reinstalled. It was a wise move and just in time. They were smart (or lucky) enough to have held onto the clip and not erase its source forever. I hope some individual out there is reading this. By the way, gay and lesbian marriages have just become legal in my California this past month of June, 2008. Many thousands who've waited up to 30 years are now finally tying the knot... At least until the Religious Right –ignorance and fear tries to change our state constitution. What is YOUR position? Do you care at all?
